On May 4, 1974, Kavanaugh’s Paint & Body Co. first opened its doors in a modest 3 bay shop at 4035 Preston Hwy. Its founder Phil Kavanaugh Sr. was merely 18 years old but had been working on cars in his parent’s garage since he was 12 years old. Phil Sr was known area wide as an expert at frame repairs and was a master craftsman at body and paintwork as well. The shop lasted a few years at the Preston Hwy location but the condition of the building and the inability to purchase the building just didn’t allow things to work out. After vigorously being recruited Phil Kavanaugh Sr. decided to close the shop on Preston and went back to work at Bluegrass Lincoln Mercury during the day and continued for a few years to run his business at nights and weekends out of his household garage until he found the current property at 1376 Belmar Drive in 1983. From its initial modest 4 bay shop, the business flourished into its current 10k square foot plus building plus its multiple storage lots. The way the business was able to grow was quite simple. Not from advertising or any gimmicks, but hard work, quality repairs by quality people and word of mouth advertising from great customers. Over the years Kavanaugh’s gained the reputation of being able to fix just about anything. Rather it be a small car, a bus, a truck, a race car, a monster truck, or an RV, classic or exotic cars or even a plane or a helicopter, Kavanaugh’s has repaired just about anything. Back then things were simpler, as the business grew, cars got more complex and evolved. Kavanaugh’s has evolved with those times and is still capable and does work literally on just about everything.
